For most of us, the start of a new year is a time to reset certain areas of our lives. We plan to eat healthier and go to the gym. We plan to read more books. We plan to spend more time pursuing hobbies and less time scrolling. We purchase tools to help us track our goals and pursue our dreams. I’m not a big new year resolution setter, but there is one that I have attempted multiple times yet proved elusive.
I would like to read the entire Bible, and most plans are structured to accomplish this in a year. I’ve attempted this several times in my little life with little success, but I may have found a tool to get me a bit closer to the finish line.
In October 2025, I started the Read a Book of the Bible in a Week plan, created by James L. Dutton. Each book of the Bible is broken down over seven days. It’s that simple. I like finishing the book in a week, versus dragging out books like Isaiah and Genesis. I also think that reading this way has helped me retain more of what’s happening in that particular book of the Bible. Reading this way also helps me recognize patterns or repeated themes in the author’s writing. This practice is also giving me a greater awe of the scriptures, and an appreciation for God’s love and consistency that is on full display throughout the scriptures. Each day after I complete the assigned reading, I make a quick note about the text. That note is usually a verse that caught my attention.
Here’s a thing to note, but I’m sure that you’re already thought about this if you know the number of books in the Bible. It will take me 66 weeks to complete the plan, provided that I don’t miss any days. There are 52 weeks in a year, so it will take me over a year to read the Bible. Yep, and I’m ok with that. At this point in my life, I’ll choose to be satisfied with a consistent, achievable path toward completion.
