My mother loves books. She made sure my siblings and I had a home full of books. Tommy dePaola and the Grimm Brothers graced our shelves. Later, Amazing Grace and Ms. Frizzle joined the party. Some of my earliest memories are connected to read along cassettes, anticipating the sound so that I could turn the page. As I got older, I could devour a chapter book in a day.

Unfortunately, the rigors of school kinda killed my delight in reading. Sure, my middle and high school teachers introduced me to some good books, but it’s hard to enjoy reading when it’s a requirement. It’s hard to let yourself escape to wherever the book wants to take you when you have a test or paper in two weeks.

Fast forward. I am a mother of four teens. In case you didn’t know, teenage folks can be a bit snarky. My crew couldn’t understand why my reading selections were purely non-fiction. My books of choice were non-fiction personal and spiritual development. This did not sit well with my people. After enduring a sufficient amount of snark, I started intentionally reading fiction again. That was almost three years ago, and it has been a joyful adventure discovering my reading interests. Yes, I still read non-fiction, but fiction has provided the delightful escape that I need in this season of life.

What types of books do you enjoy? Do you prefer physical copies, digital copies, or listening on the go?
